Our story.

Winston Mok, a former Google product manager, founded Woosh in the wake of the 2018 California wildfires and the surge in remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic. These events underscored the critical issue of indoor air quality maintenance at home. In response to this need for accessible air filtration, Mok and his team leveraged 3D printing to design Woosh's initial air filter. Dissatisfied with conventional filters, they embarked on the creation of an intelligent solution that actively monitors air quality and delivers real-time insights through a mobile app. This innovation ensures that everyone can enjoy the benefits of optimal indoor air quality in their homes.

Podcast: Is Kickstarter still relevant for smart devices?

This week’s guest is Winston Mok, the founder and product lead of Woosh Air, a company making a connected air filter. We talk about how Woosh works, its focus on sustainability, and how it plans to integrate within existing smart home services. We also talk about Mok’s decision to use Kickstarter to launch the connected air filter, a decision that would have been a no brainer back in 2014, but seems almost quaint now. Mok explains why he thinks Kickstarter was a good option for Woosh and shares some of the benefits he got from launching on the platform. He also discusses how it it helped prepare for manufacturing at scale amidst the chip shortage, and shared advice on dealing with that situation. It’s a really useful interview.

Research & Development.

Throughout our journey we have continually invested in a strong technical foundation for our product design and methods. In order to iterate on designs, we've had to develop custom equipment and processes to give quick cycles of learnings & Insights. Additionally we've leaned on our partners who have provided invaluable support and guidance to help us produce the best product possible.

Here's a photo of dust testing where we load up our filters with certified dust in order to similar years of accumulation. We nicknamed this test 'The Big Dirty'!

Heads down. Prototyping.

Unique circumstances breed unique opportunities. In this case, Covid shelter-in-place was a time to focus and innovate.

Every months goal was to create a new prototype that was an improvement on the previous month. Rinse and repeat month after month until it worked.

See our Instagram for photos of numerous prototypes along the way:

Sept 2019

The idea of Woosh emerged.

Woosh was founded after the 2019 forest fires in California. The lack of air filters and the need for clean air drove the desire for a better solution. In true startup style, the first Woosh products were made from air filters and fans in a California garage.

With a small army of 3D printers and a team of dedicated innovators, Woosh quickly made a splash into the world of HVAC. Traditional cardboard filter designs aren’t convenient to ship, lack smartness and connectivity, and could be more sustainable.

After numerous interviews with homeowners and countless prototypes, we knew we were on to something.
