Smarter Air Filters

4 minute read
At Woosh Air, we’re revolutionizing air quality with our smart air filters, designed to keep your HVAC systems running smoothly and your indoor environment healthy. Our filters aren’t just your average cardboard replacements — they have a reusable frame with advanced sensors that continuously monitor the condition of your filter and HVAC system, ensuring optimal performance and air quality.
Let’s take a peek at how our technology works and the data that drives our recommendations. More to come with future posts!

How Woosh Air Filters Work

Traditional cardboard air filters rely on visual inspection or fixed schedules for replacement, often leading to premature changes or, worse, leaving filters in place long after they’ve become clogged and ineffective.

Woosh Smart Air filters solve this problem with built-in sensors that monitor:
Early prototype of Woosh sensor module
#1 - Differential Air Pressure: Indicates how much resistance the air encounters as it moves through the filter. A rising pressure drop suggests that the filter is becoming clogged.
#2 - Temperature and Humidity: Environmental conditions that can affect the performance of both the filter and the HVAC system.
These sensors collect data in real time, allowing us to assess the health of the filter and predict when a change is truly needed. This approach not only helps maintain high air quality but also optimizes the efficiency of your HVAC system, potentially saving on energy costs and reducing the risk of system failures.

Behind the Scenes: How We Determine Filter Change Cycles

The data our sensors collect is fed into proprietary algorithms that analyze patterns and detect changes in filter performance. Through extensive laboratory and real-world testing, we’ve fine-tuned these algorithms to provide precise recommendations. Here’s a glimpse of how our system works, using ideal data from various HVAC setups:
    Single Fan Speed HVAC System:
In a single fan speed system, the data shows a clear, consistent pattern of increasing pressure drop. The filter change point is prominently marked, demonstrating how the system’s resistance drops significantly with a new filter. This visual reset underscores the importance of timely filter changes to maintain optimal airflow and system health.
    Multi-Fan Speed HVAC System:
This example shows a simpler multi-fan speed system. The data points cluster into distinct bands, each corresponding to different fan speeds. Over time, we observe a steady increase in pressure drop, indicating the filter’s degradation. Our sensors track these changes, and our algorithm determines the optimal time for a filter replacement, ensuring the system runs efficiently without unnecessary changes.
    Multi-Fan Speed & Multi-Zone HVAC System:
In this setup, we see pressure data fluctuating due to varying fan speeds and zone configurations. The annotated points mark when the filter was changed. Notice how the pressure drop resets after each change, highlighting the impact of a new, clean filter. The gradual increase in pressure drop between changes illustrates the natural clogging process.

The Value of Smart Air Filters

By using Woosh Air filters, you’re not just replacing a filter — you’re adopting a smarter, data-driven approach to air quality management and HVAC maintenance.
    Our technology:
Automatically notifies: Filter change alerts are sent via email and push notifications to the Woosh App (see screenshot below)
Optimizes Filter Life: Recommending changes based on actual need rather than arbitrary schedules, which can extend filter life up to 12 months.
Mitigates System Failures: Detecting clogs and other potential issues before they lead to costly damage.
Ensures Proper Installation: Monitoring for correct installation (Based on our data, 20% of users install their filters backward).
Improves Air Quality: Using our MERV 13 filters, which have low initial pressure and capture pollutants like pollen, dust, smoke, bacteria, and viruses.
